Health Clinic Corner

Welcome to Cloudcroft’s health services page. We want to partner with you in prioritizing the health and safety of your children, so this page contains information you need about immunizations, health screenings, and required forms for administering medication at school.

Everyone will submit a health form and an emergency form at registration, which you can pick up at each school office. Throughout the school year, parents/guardians may submit changes to either form via the school nurse.

Measles Facts

Because the majority of measles cases in the U.S. occur in unvaccinated individuals, here are some reminders:

  • First signs of symptoms (some or all of these symptoms will occur two to four days before the rash): cough, fever, runny nose, pink eye.
  • The rash begins in two to four days. Flat red spots begin at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.
  • Contagious period: four days before the rash develops to four days after the rash onset.
  • Complications from measles are more likely in babies and young children under the age of five and can include ear infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, and death due to the respiratory and neurological effects of the disease.

If you develop any of the above symptoms, especially after traveling to an area where measles cases are on the rise (e.g., West Texas or Lea County, New Mexico), please do not come to school. Stay home and contact a medical provider. (Call your provider on the phone before going to the office.)

Region 9 School-Based Health Center Telemedicine Program

We are pleased to inform you about the Region 9 School-Based Health Center Telemedicine Program, which provides free telehealth sick visits for students right at their school!

This program offers families a convenient way for students to receive medical care when they become sick during the school day. Through a secure telehealth visit, students can connect with a healthcare provider without having to leave school for an appointment at a medical office.

How Does the Program Work?

  1. Student Visits the School Nurse: If a student feels sick during the school day, they visit the school nurse.
  2. Nurse Assesses the Student: The school nurse evaluates the student’s symptoms to determine if a telehealth visit may be appropriate.
  3. Parent/Guardian Is Contacted: The school nurse calls the parent or guardian to explain the program and offer a free telehealth sick visit.
  4. Consent Forms Are Completed: If the parent or guardian agrees, the necessary consent forms are completed, and the student’s information is sent to the Region 9 SBHC.
  5. Telehealth Visit Takes Place: The student joins a telemedicine call with the healthcare provider, with the school nurse present to assist as needed.
  6. Parents Can Join the Visit: Parents or guardians are welcome to participate in the telehealth visit using a link sent to their cell phone via text message. If a parent/guardian cannot join, they will receive a follow-up call from the healthcare provider.

Please note that telehealth services are not appropriate for every illness or medical emergency. If a student requires an in-person evaluation or additional care, the school nurse will make appropriate recommendations.

We encourage you to take advantage of this valuable service for your child by completing the attached Registration/Consent Form.

If you would like more information about the Region 9 School-Based Health Center Telemedicine Program, please contact your school nurse or Ashlee at the Region 9 SBHC at 575-630-7974.

Thank you for partnering with us to support the health, well-being, and academic success of our students!

Student Injuries and Insurance, 2026–2027

Dear Parent/Legal Guardian:

Your school is committed to providing a safe environment for your student. As such, your school carries accident medical coverage for injuries to students that occur while your student is on campus attending regularly scheduled classes, practicing and playing in interscholastic sports for the school, and while attending events that are directly sponsored by and directly supervised by the school. Please know that your school does not assume responsibility for these costs, and the policy is provided to assist when accidents do happen and help with resulting medical treatment. The policy is secondary to any existing primary coverage to assist with any co-pays and deductibles left by primary coverage. In the event there is no primary coverage, this policy will act as primary in those instances to assist with medical costs.

If the district student accident insurance policy will be your primary coverage for school related activities and interscholastic sports and you are asked to provide a policy number, you should use Ace American Insurance Company SDA N1901292A. If you have primary coverage, you’ll want to continue to use your primary coverage policy number when asked to provide it for all school activities.

The attached brochure will help explain the benefits of the school-time plan the school has already purchased for you and who to contact in the event you need to file a claim. Any questions regarding this coverage and claim filing can be directed to Eric Swartz with Myers-Stevens & Toohey at 800-827-4695.

A Message from Our Nurse

Dear Cloudcroft Community,

My name is Mandy Ross, and I am your school nurse here at Cloudcroft Schools. I am the nurse for the district, so I see kids in all grades on a daily basis. I am here to attend to illness or injury, assist students with chronic conditions, administer daily medications to students as prescribed by their physician, provide health education both one-on-one and in the classroom, conduct hearing and vision screenings, and ensure compliance with our new student immunization laws. Please take a moment to read the letter from the New Mexico Department of Health Cabinet Secretary regarding the changes to both the immunization requirements and laws that can affect your student.

It is important that we do everything in our power to keep the students in our schools as healthy as possible, and we must work together to succeed. To that end, I would encourage you to keep your children home from school if they have a fever, are vomiting, or generally look and feel unwell enough that they need to stay at home and rest. I have witnessed many illnesses begin with one student and quickly wipe out an entire classroom. Please be mindful of this when you are readying your child for school in the morning when they may be ill. When a student comes to the clinic and reports feeling unwell, I will check for fever and call you for pick-up if one is present. If not, I will assess whatever their ailment may be, and do what I can to keep them comfortable and at school if possible.

Some very simple ways to keep your child healthy include frequent hand washing, good nutrition, adequate sleep, and staying away from others who are ill. I encourage you to follow these guidelines at home so your child can be well and succeed at school.

Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions or concerns you may have!
